Commercial Staircase Designs

Commercial spaces must abide by strict building codes to ensure safety. When creating any commercial staircase design, it is imperative to enforce these building codes.

One requirement you must implement into your commercial staircase design is the height of the railings and handrails. As per Florida Building Code, railings must be 42″ high and handrails must be 36″ high. In the event where the staircase exceeds 44″ in width, it is required to have a handrail on each side of the staircase. This ensures the safety of dual traffic when traveling up and down the staircase simultaneously. Custom handrails can also be made in different shapes; from round, squared, to flat-bar styled handrails. Handrails can be chosen in many different finishes. Some of the most popular choices are brushed stainless steel, mirror polished, or matte black. Flat-bar handrails are perfect for achieving a modern or contemporary design.

Commercial staircases can be customized in many different designs. A spiral staircase is a perfect solution for any compact commercial space in need of a stair. When designing a spiral staircase for any commercial space, as per Florida Building Code, the risers cannot surpass seven inches in height. When selecting what type of glass materials to be utilized in commercial spaces, it is stated in the Florida Building Codes to use Laminated Glass for safety purposes. In the event where laminated glass is broken, the broken glass panel stays intact due to an inter-layer between the glass. This prevents any shards of glass from injuring anyone. Implementing these building codes into your commercial design will ensure safety without compromising the overall aesthetic of your design.
