Types of Glass Railings

When implementing glass into your design, it is imperative to select the correct type of glass for your project. Whether you are designing glass railings, glass treads, or glass wall panels, it is important to know what the difference is between one type of glass to another.

Laminated Glass

One type of glass to choose from is laminated glass. Laminated glass is recommended when designing or installing glass treads and railings. In regards to the type of materials utilized in commercial spaces, when selecting glass, it is stated in the Florida Building Codes to use Laminated Glass for safety purposes. In the event where laminated glass is broken, the broken glass panel stays intact due to an inter-layer between the glass. This prevents any shards of glass from injuring anyone. This type of glass allows the shattered glass panel to stay intact, which is particularly ideal for commercial spaces.

Tempered Glass

Another type of glass you can choose to utilize is tempered glass. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength. When tempered glass is shattered, it is broken up into smaller granular chunks instead of jagged glass shards. This makes the shattered glass safer and less likely to cause injury. Tempered glass is used in a variety of applications, including shower doors, architectural glass doors, tables, refrigerator trays, screen protectors, and various types of plates and cookware. Tempered glass can be used in residential spaces, but is not recommended for commercial spaces.

Starphire glass

Starphire glass is an ultra-clear, high-clarity glass made from silica with very low amounts of iron. By having low levels of iron, it removes the greenish-blue tint that can be seen in other types of glass. Starphire glass leaves a clean and bright ambiance to any room. A perfect solution for anyone who desires to brighten up a darkened spaces. We have utilized starphire glass in many of our glass railing designs, and the results are always stunning. Sometimes the smallest details makes the largest impact.
